Joomla enters Google Summer of Code programme

San Antonio : Open source content management system Joomla on Tuesday said it will participate in the Google Summer of Code programme, Web Host Industry Review reports.

Through the programme, eight students will work on individual projects that may eventually be used by Joomla.

Google Summer of Code is a global programme that offers post-secondary student developers $5 000 stipends to write code for various open source software projects, according to its Web site.

Joomla has participated in the programme in the past, from 2005 to 2009. This news comes a month after Joomla revealed that its open source CMS has been downloaded more than 30 million times.

In all, there are eight students that are working on eight separate projects that may eventually be used by Joomla, Market Watch notes.

These assignments include creating Facebook and Google services, MediaWiki APIs, multi-language options for installation, and much more.

The Google Summer of Code is a global programme that runs until 24 August.

The students working on Joomla projects are from Brazil, France, Romania, Sri Lanka and the US.
