Google Desktop Search Includes Real-time Tweets in Search Results

Whenever users enter a search query in Google, they will see several tweets (on what they are searching for) in the search results. The update was not announced by Google when it was not working on mobile devices. Earlier in May 2015, Google released the update for mobile devices; upon the release of the update for mobile devices, users will now be able to see the real-time tweets even when they search through the Google app or any browser on their smartphones or tablets.

Google isn’t the first search engine to include tweets

  • The update actually came out after almost six months after Twitter unveiling its deal with Google. Also, it has to be noted that, this was not the first time that Google and Twitter announced the partnership. Of course, Google is not the first search engine to include the tweets in its search results. Bing had started to include tweets in the search results since last year’s summer season.
     
  • Though Google and Twitter had an agreement for the tweets to be included in the search results back in 2009, the agreement was shelved later in 2011 as Ali Rowghani (CEO of Twitter at that time) wanted Twitter to have more control over the content being released by the users.

Real-time tweets in search results fasten user growth

  • Currently Twitter has about 316 million active users per month and the number still continues to increase. It has been noted that the Twitter’s pace of growth has become much slower when compared to previous years. But the agreement between Google and Twitter to include real-time tweets in the search results seems to be more significant than the previous agreements.
     
  • While Twitter was criticized for its problem on slower user growth, the agreement to bring in real-time tweets in search results was expected to increase the pace of user growth. Through this development, Twitter is looking for an extension to its reach. It’s also hoping that the tweets popping up in the search results would push a few users who are not on Twitter to sign up for the service.
